In partnership with AICPA and CIMA, ABWA facilitated six student members attending the 2025 AICPA Scholars Leadership Workshop in Oklahoma City, OK October 15-17. AICPA (American Institute of Certified Public Accountants) is the national professional organization for CPAs and CIMA is the Charted Institute of Management Accountants.

The Accounting Scholars Leadership Workshop (ASLW) is open to college and university students through a competitive application process. The program seeks to inspire the next generation of accounting and finance professionals and expand the diversity of talent within the profession. Attendees learn strategies for networking, personal branding and business etiquette and creating a career path.
Below a couple of ABWA attendees reflect on the experience – lessons learned and the impact on their personal and professional goals.
Latanya Carter, a Junior at Coppin State University
This event was amazing. I was able to connect with the most amazing people. The meet and greet with the professionals on the first night was my favorite part of the event. I met a young lady, Evin Hughes, a student from Oklahoma, who intimidated the heck out of me. I want every young black girl to aspire to be like her. Do the things that scare you. I also met Rachael Gibson, Chief Inclusion Officer at Crowe, she listened to my story and wanted everyone else to hear it, so she made me part of her Imposter Syndrome presentation the following day. She agrees with me that Imposter Syndrome does not exist.
I made connections that I hope will help me along in my career. I learned some important information that will assist me in planning the next steps after I obtain my degree.
Alyson Nishimura, a Senior at California Baptist University
The AICPA did an outstanding job creating meaningful opportunities for students to connect with professionals in a relaxed and engaging environment. One of the most impactful sessions for me was Chris Simmons’ talk on future-thinking networking. He emphasized the importance of being intentional about the personal brand we present when meeting others. His message reminded me that how we show up—both professionally and personally—can leave lasting impressions that shape future opportunities.
This experience allowed me to build meaningful relationships with other driven and passionate students. These connections went beyond our shared interest in accounting and truly encouraged me to keep striving for excellence. I feel fortunate to have met such an amazing group of future leaders, and I’m excited to grow alongside them in this profession.
ASLW was an incredible opportunity to learn, grow, and be inspired by professionals and peers alike. I’m thankful to the AICPA and event sponsors for investing in the next generation of leaders. I’m excited to begin this journey and look forward to supporting and staying connected with the community I met through this experience.
